MIR in child psychiatry: training program and duration

The Ministry of Health published this Friday an order approving and publishing the training programs in the specialties of Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, as well as the evaluation criteria of training specialists and the requirements for accreditation of multi-professional mental health training units. The total duration of training will be Five years. Thus it is fixed total training period of two years during which basic skills for both majors will be acquired. The main objective of this training program is establish the skills that must be acquired and developed during training in the specialty of Psychiatry to obtain the title of specialist. A second objective is to define assessment criteria specific to these competencies.

The training will be done through Multi-professional mental health units of study already accredited or which are accredited after approval of the training programme. However, according to the ministry, “certain training remains in the health sciences majors or in specific areas of mental health that present content whose knowledge is useful for better and more complete training of residents, they may take place in other learning devices with which there is a prior agreement or cooperation agreement and that it has the relevant accreditation and teaching capacity.’


A rotation of 55 months in study units

In this way, the period of stay for training in other specialties will be adapted, so that a proposal for the development of the training program will be drawn up, which envisages “55 months of rotation in different learning deviceswith the exception of the 5 months corresponding to annual leave”.

In this sense, It is believed that specialties with useful content would be Pediatrics and its subspecialties, Family and Community Medicine, Internal Medicine and Neurology.. However, the ministry cautions that “due to the complexity of certain rotations and the differences inherent in the training models required to acquire the necessary skills, rotations may be adapted to the characteristics of services and hospitals and the number of residents in training.


MIR in child psychiatry will perform 4-5 hospital shifts per month


During the first two years of study, which correspond to studies in general subjects, “the faculty in residence will organize an individual study planensuring compliance with the Teaching Guide or pathway approved by the Teaching Committee and ensuring that residents achieve the designated learning objectives” of the training program.

It also includes the ability to “specific programs” i.e. these treatment programs aimed at a “comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach” to certain mental disorders. These will include, as determined by the ministry, perinatal psychiatry programs, an eating disorder care program, a first psychotic episode program and comprehensive care for autism spectrum disorders and psychiatry liaison programs.


Between 4 and 5 sick days per month

To acquire skills related to emergency pathologies, MIR will do 4 or 5 shifts per month, on hospital emergencies, considering emergencies in general hospitals only in the first year of training. Also it will be mandatory to “participate in the training activities of the training unit itselfas well as those created by the Study Committee”.

Similarly the resident physician will have a period of free choice to supplement their training as a specialist in child and adolescent psychiatry in national or international centers. In any case, it is preferable to do it in the fifth year of residence.


Improved mental health of children and adolescents

The Ministry of Health has decided to open a Child Psychiatry specialty, according to the said order, as it understands that “Mental health care is essential for the general populationwhich is even more important for children and adolescents, which is why it is revealed as one of the priorities in general health plans”.

Thus, this new specialty is expected”improving mental health care for adults, children and adolescents under the age of 18thanks to the training of medical specialists”, as well as ensuring the acquisition of skills by residents of both specialties and the quality of Multi-professional mental health units of study.
