The purpose of this study is to improve the sleep of these young athletes to contribute to their proper growth and improve their sports performance.

Quironsalud Valencia has started a a study of the sleep of boys and girls from the school and the career of Valencia Basket in order to improve its quantity and quality and thus contribute to the correct growth and better recovery of muscles and sports performance of the children and adolescents who make it up.

As stated by Dr. Gonzalo Pin, Ch from the pediatric service and coordinator of the Quirónsalud Valencia Sleep Unit“Our main goal with this study is to develop collective and individual proposals that improve the sleep of these children and adolescents, implement a proper culture of rest, and increase knowledge about the importance of sleep and its development in their families.”

The importance of sleep in young athletes

Recovery after training is vital for all athletes, especially during childhood and adolescence, where the balance between training stress and physical recovery must be managed to maximize adaptation. As he explains Dr. Gonzalo Pin, “the repetitive and demanding nature of the season can test the physiological and psychological capacity of athletes, especially younger athletes, who must maintain a balance between stress and recovery and adopt recovery strategies that manage fatigue and enhance your recovery, as well as performance in your training and sports tests. The regulation of performance during exercise is increasingly interpreted as a process that involves both the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system, in which good rest plays an essential role in their harmonious coupling.

“In childhood and adolescence,” it concludes the sleep specialist at Quirónsalud Valencia,” Adequate sleep time, as well as quality sleep with correct rhythms, is essential for proper physical and neurocognitive development, as during certain phases of sleep the body releases a number of substances such as growth hormone and strengthening the immune system. which protects the child from infections, among others, which are essential at this stage of life”.
