Since February 2017, the government of Ecuador has established different types of naturalization processes to obtain citizenship without the foreign national renouncing his origin.
The conditions for obtaining Ecuadorian citizenship are as follows: naturalization by marriage or de facto union, naturalization by adoption, naturalization of children or adolescents born abroad of an Ecuadorian mother or father by naturalization.

Naturalization by marriage or de facto union: what are the requirements?
- Proof of residence in one of the migration categories specified in the Organic Law on Human Mobility, excluding the categories of temporary visitors and applicants for international protection.
- You have an appropriate document, duly apostilled or legalized and issued by the competent authority of the country of origin, indicating the place of birth and details of the applicant’s origin.
- Present the certificate of marriage or de facto union, duly registered in the Civil Registry.
- Present in an interview the reasons why you want to acquire Ecuadorian citizenship.
- Keep up with your obligations to the Ecuadorian state.
- Application form for Ecuadorian citizenship through marriage or de facto union with an Ecuadorian person, to be completed at the appropriate zonal address of the applicant’s place of residence.

“The foreign national, in order to be approved, must obtain a percentage of 90% (equivalent to 27 points) as established in Article 67 of the Ordinances to the Organic Law on Human Mobility. If the third attempt does not pass the evaluation, the citizen must wait one year to resubmit the application for naturalization, according to the El Universo portal.

Naturalization by adoption
This method grants Ecuadorian citizenship to foreign children and adolescents who are adopted by an Ecuadorian person. Before you can apply for naturalization, the sentence issued abroad must be approved in Ecuador, according to the Ecuadorian government website.
What are the requirements?
- Application form for Ecuadorian citizenship, to be completed in the relevant zonal coordination of the place of residence of the applicant(s).
- Apostilled or legalized documents, duly translated if applicable, proving the adoption.
- Approval in Ecuador of a court decision and/or adoption decision issued by a foreign authority.

- Migration movement of minors and their parents.
- Identity card of Ecuadorian or foreign parent(s) seeking naturalization.
- A document that proves the marital status of the Ecuadorian or foreign parent(s) requesting the naturalization of the minor or adolescent child.
Naturalization of children or adolescents born abroad
This is the service aimed at registering the births of children and adolescents born abroad, children of an Ecuadorian father or mother through naturalization, which can be done in civil registry agencies.

Mandatory requirements in Ecuador
- Proof of payment.
- Parents’ ID card.
- A letter of naturalization or executive order of the father or mother.

What do I need for the procedure?

Considerations for granting naturalization for relevant services
It is an administrative process under the jurisdiction of the Presidency of the Republic, through which, by executive decree, Ecuadorian citizenship is granted to a foreign person who, residing regularly for more than three years in national territory, has provided the relevant services to Ecuador.
“The granting of citizenship for the relevant services to the country will be granted by the President of the Republic of Ecuador, according to the procedure established in the provisions of this law. It can be requested by an individual, a group or a social organization,” according to Article 76 of the Law on the Mobility of People.
