How to Schedule an Appointment and Requirements – NBC New York (47)

NEW JERSEY — On May 3, 2023, federal REAL ID regulations go into effect, a document that will be required to board domestic air flights for travelers without a domestic passport or other form of identification approved by the federal government.

Until the deadline, a standard New Jersey driver’s license is valid for air travel in the United States.

Those who have tried to obtain documentation in the Garden State have encountered difficulties. However, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has announced that it has up to 1,000 REAL ID appointments in all 24 offices.

People can also process the document through the agency’s mobile units. For information on these phones and to book an appointment, go here.

The original deadline of October 1, 2020 was pushed back twice, first to October 1, 2021, and then to May 3, 2023, due to the coronavirus pandemic and the backlog it caused in motor vehicle departments around the world.

New Jersey began issuing Real ID licenses and non-driver ID cards in September 2019, gradually rolling them out to more state Motor Vehicle Commission agencies while staff were trained.

After the latest extension, May 3, 2023 is the date travelers should remember when Real ID security standards go into effect to fly domestically.

Both the REAL ID driver’s license and the standard driver’s license are valid for driving.

HOW DO I KNOW I HAVE A REAL ID?

WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED TO GET A REAL ID

People are probably familiar with what they currently have to provide to the motor vehicle agency as proof of identification for a standard ID. They must have a verifiable social security number, must provide 1 document as proof of address, and must provide identification that adds up to 6 points in accordance with New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission guidelines.

For REAL ID, there will be new math at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

2 + 1 + 6 = REAL

What does this mean? This means you will need to bring the following to get a REAL ID:

2 DOCUMENTS AS PROOF OF YOUR ADDRESS

  • Valid driver’s license/non-driver ID or driver’s license renewal form issued by the Motor Vehicle Commission (showing residential address)
  • Utility bill or credit card issued within the last 90 days
  • A checking or savings account statement from a bank or credit union issued within the last 60 days
  • Original and current lease or rental agreement
  • Tax bill, statement or receipt and/or any letters or correspondence received from the IRS or the tax office in the past year
  • First class mail from any government agency within the last six months
  • If under the age of 18, a statement from a parent or guardian verifying the applicant’s address

MVC NO LONGER REQUIRE DOCUMENTS AS PROOF OF YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER

Starting Wednesday, June 15, the Motor Vehicle Commission will no longer require applicants to show a Social Security card or other document to prove a Social Security number.

MVC will verify the applicant’s Social Security number, name and date of birth with the Social Security Administration. If they do not match, the request will be rejected.

The database can also be used to verify information on standard New Jersey driver’s licenses and other identification cards, the MVC said in a statement.
